This page has links to discussions of viewers and adjustments that may help while sailing.
(I’ll keep adding to it)
Sailing in SL:
1. Bri Hasp’s thread on Slsailing.org has a December 2009 discussion of these issues: http://slsailing.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4033
2. Bri references the following great article: http://joelfoner.com/2009/12/8-ways-to-make-low-perf-computer-second-life-faster/
3. 2006 Graphics settings recommendations from Cory Copeland: http://slsailing.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2199#2199
Third party viewers:
Emerald: http://modularsystems.sl/
At the moment, I really like Emerald, though I suspect it’s more crash-prone than other, simpler viewers. I like Emerald for all the wrong reasons.
Nobuko Criss demonstrates Emerald’s advantages:

Search Engines:
Many recent reviews discuss ‘Bing’ vs ‘Google’ for different search applications.
I use Google for ‘first pass,’ and then turn to proprietary databases for more details.
Google I admit works for 95% of what I want, but I wondered if Bing could do better.
I did a number of comparison searches.
My key words must remain ‘sekrit,’ but I admit they were all open phrases similar to:
“Gertrude Stein walks into a bar…”
Bing never took me seriously, responding to each attempt with a blank screen.
On the other hand, Google gave me an average of 17 hits to each query I submitted. Many of the Google links were interesting, I admit.
I never ended up with a good Gertrude Stein bar-joke, however.

Thanks for adding my reference post on optimizing low performance computers. I hope it’s helpful, and please feel free to add comments with any new tips or ideas you think up.

Joel
