I’m not sure if anyone noticed but the last update of the knockabout and the T20 included an updae to the transom naming system (it no longer changes color). New templates have been updated on Jacquelines website (well the old customisation links now point to the new templates). Or you can use the old ones and fiddle the texture settings to suit.

Jane, any chance you can finally unprotect the J-Class page? Would love to discuss the J-Class there. Or maybe here… my question is, has anyone done the PHRF hotlap with it, and how does it score?

I have maybe 4 articles to post on J-Class; Hopefully the first rolls out today.
What’s the phrf? I think I already posted it based on early beta test results. The J-Class scored a handicap of .93, which I think underestimates it’s real abilities.
That puts it on a par with the Defender II and Trucordia Yawl, but ranks it slower than the ACA33 or even the Larinda.
The problem here, however, is that the ACA33 and Larinda don’t use “apparent wind” and are therefore unfairly matched with the new J-Class. This is an interesting discussion, and I’m looking forward to people’s opinions about ‘speed’ in this context.
I also think that it underestimates the ability. I would have expected it to go faster than Larinda… but then, I have never sailed irl and I don’t know what kind of performance a schooner should get, versus the J-Class.
I’m confused what the “expectations” on the J class are based on (FWIS, I have no expectations, so I’m not disagreeing). As I (dimly, I admit) understand it, each boat uses its own collection of physics equations to determine speed given a bunch of inputs. In RL, these equations are indeed common to every boat (although I doubt the correct equations are fully known yet). Thus, the expectations of experienced sailors based on observations and “feel” would carry significant weight. But in SL a designer could, I think, change a coefficient or three and change the PHRF number by any factor they pleased, which could play havoc (havok?) with expectations.

Well, so am I; it’s a confusing issue.
I think we all seek a progressively more accurate emulation of real-life sailing, and I admit that’s not always easy or direct.
Certainly, the same problems exist in RL and SL; Sailing is a different sport depending whether you engage in short dinghy races or substantially longer, offshore crewed competitions.
Perhaps we could all work together to evolve a bigger vision of Sailing that incorporates all the varied aspects….
