Five Weeks to Second Sol Regatta!

patch2betaSecSol Update

Woots! The Second Sol Regatta is still five weeks away, but plans are heating up, and all the details are falling into place.

Second Sol is a Sail4Life fundraising regatta that will cover two weekends, from June 15-June 23; you can read all about it here. I wanted to take a moment today to throw in a couple quick updates!

1. The Regatta was initially designed for a maximum of 16 racing teams divided into four different timeslot groups for the qualifying rounds on June 15 and June 22. Well, as of today there are more than a dozen teams already signed up and we still have more than a month to go. At the request of several sailors, I’m increasing the enrollment to 20 race teams, and adding a fifth timeslot. That last timeslot will race on Friday June 14 and 21, at a convenient time to be determined. If you want to switch to Friday, send a message to Jane Fossett in Second Life. :-)

Waypoint patchogues 2009

2. I’m also very happy to announce the Patchogue II raceboat is on the water in beta this week, and it looks pretty great. :-) Today KalEl and I tried hard to break it, but the boat proved tough and stable. We sailed back-and-forth across many sims with winds >31 knots this morning. patch2beta Kal-JaneHowever, with a couple reefs in the sail and the team hiked all the way windward, the boat sailed like a real champ; we hit a speed-over-ground of over 34 knots! (And you thought Trudeaus were slow?) :-)

Beta testing is slated to end soon, and all the teams signed up for Second Sol will get their own new Patchogue II’s delivered on May 25. That will give the fleet a full three weeks to practice before the Regatta opens!

So if you want to join in and race Second Sol with us in June, welcome aboard! Second Sol will be a great chance to Sail for Fun, Sail with Friends, and Sail4Life.

Fire Island Light Preview

Fire Island previewIf you love lighthouses (and who doesn’t), you may want to stop in Stoogle for a preview look at RJ Kikuchiyo‘s recreation of New York’s Fire Island light.

The lighthouse was first commissioned by Congress in the mid-19th century, and for several generations it safely guided merchant vessels into New York Harbor. FI lightFire Island light was often the first glimpse of this new country for the throngs of immigrants that came to America over a century ago.

In 1974 the venerable beacon was decommissioned and it fell into disrepair due to the limited resources of the National Park Service. It was at risk of being demolished.

Many community members were determined to prevent that, however. They appreciated the importance of Fire Island Light to America’s maritime history, and they understood it’s iconic symbolism. Thirty years ago they formed the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society, raising over 1.3 million dollars for the restoration and preservation of the lighthouse. In 1984 Fire Island Light was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the FILPS continues to manage it.

RJ Kikuchiyo knows Fire Island Light well in real life, so it’s no surprise that he put his masterful building skills to use re-creating the historic build for Second Life. However, from the beginning of the project RJ’s intention was to make FILH a special build, an inspirational centerpiece for the Sail4Life installation on Linden Lab’s Relay For Life weekend.

Well, since last September Fire Island Light has been quietly sitting over in DYC’s Stoogle annex, waiting for it’s RFL debut in July. As you can see from the video above, this is a highly detailed, museum-quality built that stands as a fitting tribute to both FILH and the litany of other coastal beacons that shone through fog and darkness to guide mariners home.

FILH location

As part of the ongoing DYC renovations, we recently opened up the southern channel into Stoogle (the red arrow in the above map). So if you want to stop by for a preview inspection of Fire Island Lighthouse, you’re welcome to sail over and tie up at the lighthouse dock. Auto return for visitors is set at 30 minutes there, so you’ll have plenty of time to explore RJ’s build.

Be sure to visit in the next several weeks, though; you might not get another chance. :-) RJ’s decided that his Fire Island Lighthouse will be unique. There will only be one Fire Island Light in Second Life, and it will go to the highest bidder at the Sail4Life charity auction in July.

The sailor that has the heart to dig deep enough to make a winning bid on that day is going to take home far more than just a beautiful build. They’ll be graced with an enduring monument to the spirit of community that binds sailors for all time.

Sail4Life Logo Contest Ends Friday

ACS 003The Sail4Life Logo Contest ends this week! If you have an idea or concept for the logo, pull out your digital pen, paint it out in broad strokes and bright colors, and send it over to Nber Medici.

We all know the SL Sailing community is chock-full of amazing, talented, and generous people; each year S4L gets to showcase the logo design of one special artist from our group. That logo will be proudly displayed on sails, teeshirts, caps, flags, and banners.

Yes, I know what you are thinking, and you’re right! In a thoughtless moment, someone will undoubtedly also tattoo that logo on their ass. It will show how much they love SL Sailing, and how much they believe in our common cause to cure cancer. When that happens, help them make the moment memorable. Make it your graphic! :-)

So OK, you get the drift. Go read my earlier post to get the details, and find out how you can submit your entry for this year’s S4L Logo Graphic Contest!

Chaos Steps Up to Lead Sail4Life 2013

After running the most successful fundraising campaign in Sail4Life history, today Chad Sawson and Aislin Keynes officially announced they are handing over the leadership baton to Chaos Mandelbrot. Chad and Aislin wrote:

Taku Raymaker

Cap’n Chaos

Greetings Sail4life Team!
2012 was another record breaking year. The Sail4Life team came in 4th in the overall team standings and raised just under $10,000. for the American Cancer Society. We should all be extremely proud of the hard work we put in and of the generosity of the sailing community as a whole.
So, it is with reservation and sadness that Chad and I hereby announce that we are retiring as Captain and Co-Captain of the Sail4Life team. We both feel it’s time to turn the helm over to someone else. The great news is that Chaos Mandelbrot has agreed to step forward and take on the captains role. We are sure that he will do a fantastic job.
We have truly enjoyed working with the community over past years, made some remarkable life-long friends and, had tons of fun along the way. We won’t, however, be far away. We have both been in discussions with Nikki Mathieson regarding positions on the main Relay for Life of Second Life committee. So, we’ll still be around to answer any questions and offer any advice as needed.
We would like to thank all the team members, our beloved auction item providers and, everyone that stepped up to assist or support the team. We also encourage those taking team lead to keep the American Cancer Society’s mission in focus and be sure to HAVE FUN!
Fair Winds & Best Regards,
Chad Sawson and Aislin Keynes

Please give a loud woot and a standing ovation for Chad and Aislin, for their years of dedication to SLSailing’s major charity drive! Congratulations to Chaos as well; we all know he’s the Emperor Penguin, but now he’s S4L Team Captain too. :-)

All kidding aside, running S4L is a big job, and Chaos will need lots of help from sailors, boatwrights, and maritime estates grid-wide. The campaign wont kick-off until Spring 2013, but I know Chaos would like to start planning now to get his ducks in a row (as it were). :-)

So if you’d like to help organize, or if you have a great idea for a fundraiser, or if you want to coordinate with S4L to host your own major event, drop Chaos Mandelbrot a note!

Oh, and I already have one big announcement about S4L 2013; RJ Kikuchiyo has offered to build next year’s Sail4Life installation for RFL weekend in July! RJ is without question the most outstanding maritime architect in Second Life, and thinking what he can do with a year’s head start gets me so excited it’s hard to type straight. :-)

I’ll post more details as they develop, but go ahead and talk to Chaos about it yourself too. This is your Sail4Life campaign; become a part of it! :-)

Sail4Life Raises $2.34M Lindens For Cancer Research

click to enlarge – Taku and Jane sail in the marathon

After several months of clamor, commotion, and kiosks, on Sunday July 15, SL’s Relay for Life closed its doors for 2012 and ran the final totals.

The Sailing team has always been a strong supporter of RFL, and this year was no different. At the time I’m writing this, Sailing4Life raised an unofficial total of $2.34M Linden, placing it near the top in the list of SL fundraiser teams. Click on this and take a look:

During the final two days, a large part of the sailing contributions came from proceeds of the S4L auction. Many great items were on the auction docket, but the highest winning bids went for a series of very hot new sailboats. Several were so hot, they were still in beta-release on Auction Day.  Here are a few highlights:

Although he Ktaba Teleri MX hit the water just a few days ago, the S4L Edition caused a spirited bidding competition that turned into a real show-stealer. :-)  Equinox Pinion, the co-owner of Fruit Islands, won it with an incredibly generous bid of  L$58,580.  Please give her a standing ovation, but then keep standing; several other great sailors made similar auction contributions and deserve your Woots!

The VO-70 Ocean Racer by Kain Xenobuilder is still in beta, but it’s mesh build  looks pretty wonderful. Charlz Price, the owner of Triumphal Yacht Club clearly agreed. He won the beta with a winning bid of L$58,205 !! Thank you Charlz!! (Now when can we all get a ride on that boat?) :-)

Loonetta 31

Ronin Zane bellied-up to the beta-boat bidding board next. :-) He picked up two pretty fantastic beta boats that were launch-ready on auction day. Ronin won the Quest Melges-24 for a bid of L$20,150 and stayed around to get a Loonetta 31 for L$32,000. Nice work, Ronin!

Possibly the ultimate demonstration of beta-boat bidding belief came from Blackbird Latte, though. He contributed a whopping L$25,200 for the first production release of the Trudeau Glorianna, a boat that wont launch until 2013! Woots, Blackbird, welcome to the Gloriana Beta Team!!! :-)

Of course, there were many, many more wonderful donors over the weekend. To make sure I don’t miss anyone, here’s the official tally of winning bids from Chad Sawson:

Nice Work, SL Sailors!

And Super Job, Francois Jacques!!
You pulled together an auction list the SL sailing-world drooled over!

2012 Relay For Life Weekend

For each of the past eight summers sailors have joined together to support Relay For Life, Linden Lab’s major charity initiative to fund cancer research.

As part of Relay, different user groups across the grid divide into community teams. The teams each hold fundraiser events, and it all leads up to a blow-out weekend in July, held on a set of Linden sims designed for the purpose. This year RFL weekend falls on July 14-15. (That’s right, it starts tomorrow!)

SLSailing’s team is named Sail4Life, and this year it’s leaders are Chad Sawson, Aislyn Keynes, and Fancie Beebee.

With their agreement, this year several sailing clubs “jumped the gun” on RFL weekend and held early S4L events in May and June to build up enthusiasm for RFL.

In these pages, I’ve recently talked about the FIYC Poker Race, the NY30 Solstice Challenge, and Benny’s Woodstock, but actually there were many more events; I’m sorry I could not cover them all. However, it made no difference whether a fundraiser was large or small; after all, $20L is $20L, whether it comes from a loud, mega-event or from a late-night personal donation in memory of a loved one, dropped into a distant kiosk in a solitary, waterside sim.

It’s all for a common purpose, we are all together.

I’m mentioning all this because Relay For Life weekend starts tomorrow, and as soon as it opens you’re most welcome to pile in to the RFL sims. There will be things to buy and fun stuff to do, and at the S4L installation you’ll find a host of boats up for auction!

OkOk… I know you’re thinking you probably already own too many boats, or maybe you own the whole fleet… :-) You worry this boat auction will be a big yawn.

Well, sportsfans, guess again!

Francois Jacques hand-picked the boats going to auction this year, and that means you won’t be disappointed! In addition to three new Trudeau NY30′s (including one donated by Laycee Deed), you can also bid on the ultra-brand-new, meshy Ktaba 20 Teleri MX I talked about a few days ago, and the latest version of Caf Binder’s ACA (it’s that one with the fresh paint smell). :-)

And woots! that’s just the beginning…. I haven’t even mentioned the fact that Quest’s heatbreak beta, the all-time favorite unlaunched racer touted by Orca and Noodle… their boat-to-die-for … :-)

The Quest Melges 24

will be up on the auction block! Kids, this is your chance to own hull #001!

OH… Yikes, I almost forgot… :-) There’s another boat I need to shout about, but maybe you can guess. You know the worst-kept secret in the big-boat Ocean racing community? Yup, its Kain Xenobuilder’s VO70 !!!!

Well, you don’t have to stand in line drooling, wondering when you can get one of those Xeno Builds. Kain kindly donated a beta to Francois for the Auction! Geez, FJ knows what to ask for, and that means some lucky bidder will get to know this incredible boat before it ever launches!

I have a lot more to say about auction stuff, but maybe I’ve said too much already…  See? I told you this Auction was going to be fun. :-)

Let me turn the microphone over to Chad Sawson at this point, he’ll tell you how to get a mooring rental slip at SFL’s sim! To give you a flavor of what he’s talking about, I’m inserting pics from past SFL installs; click on them for a full view. :-)

2012 Sail4Life Relay Weekend Boat Slip Rental Donations

As part of the 2012 Sail4Life Team’s efforts to raise funds and help eliminate Cancer, we will be renting slips for boat owners and builders to display their pride and joy(s) and take part in the water sim activities at the 2012 Relay for Life of Second Life event July 14th & 15th.

GO SAIL4LIFE!!

Kudos to Benny

Yesterday Bennythe Boozehound treated sailors to a great concert celebration over at Nantucket Yacht Club -SL. Benny’s Woodstock lasted twelve hours, and was the product of  many weeks of effort compiling the Woodstock music and recreating the scene in Second Life.

It was all to support SAIL4LIFE, and wow, was it a success!

click

Although the music started at 09:00, many of us joined Orca Flotta in a mass cruise-to-Woodstock that took off from Triumphal Yacht Club at noontime. It was a sail-whatever-you-want cruise and, well… everybody did!

When Orca gave the word, a grand flotilla of sailcraft descended from TrYC into Bingo Strait and headed East to the party. All the green dots on the map above show that impressive armada as it moved towards Nautilus City.

The party was hosted by NYC’s Commodore Francois Jacques and co-sponsored by Charlz Price and Fiona Haworth from Triumphal. The location was high in the clouds over the NYC sim, and the event build showed much detail and care spent bringing a 1960′s ambiance to the festivities.

A crowd of roughly 40 people filled the grassy space in front of the main stage for nearly the full 12 hours, and most were dressed in sixties style!

That’s Fiona and Charlz dancing in the picture above,  and below there’s a great shot of S4L luminaries when they took the stage later in the day (click to enlarge it). That’s Chad on lead guitar, backed up by Francois and Benny. Pippa was on the congas, Harry was playing sitar, and Silber and Aislin were backup vocals. :-)

You can’t see her in the above view, but Fanci was on keyboards!

Beejee

Sadly, as with any such large event, particularly one that celebrated the culture of the 60s, drug control was a problem during the concert. It was hard to protect SL music lovers from the disreputable influences of certain characters from the shady side of our community.

However, Beejee Boucher behaved himself, and spent most of the time dancing or smoking weed out of a large backpack full of joints. :-)

The visual effects were pretty great, both on the stage and in the crowd. More than once I thought we were being griefed with mushrooms!

click

And it wouldn’t be Woodstock without rain! Thankfully there was less mud though, and no traffic jams.

click

The primary goal of the concert of course was to raise money for cancer research through the Sail4Life team, and the large crowd was particularly generous. There were two donation kiosks next to the stage, and by the time I left they were filled with over $L250,000 in contributions.

Fiona added another very nice donation touch. She had gardens of scripted flowers in front of the stage and on both sides. For a $50 contribution, you could send “a message of Hope” to someone special. There were many touching tributes, but toward the end in an effort to increase the donation totals, people bought flowers and sent Hope in many directions. After three dozen flowers, I ended up sending Hope to ‘Portuguese Water Dogs,’ ‘Ben and Jerry’s,’ and ‘Martha Stewart.’ Cate Foulsbane had the same problem; she dedicated one of her flowers to “My Swiffer Mop.” :-)

Fiona told me the flowers alone generated an additional $L35,000 towards S4L!

What a great event it was!
Thank you to Francois, Charlz, and Fiona, and everyone else involved, but most of all:

Thanks Benny!!!

Benny’s Woodstock Saturday

On Saturday June 30, Nantucket YC-SL and Triumphal YC are co-hosting a great musical event on a special stage at NYC.

For the past few weeks Benny’s been setting it up, doing sound checks, and working on the playlist… to bring WOODSTOCK to NYC for Sail4Life!

As Benny says:

“The presentation and party will be an all day affair starting at about 8:45 AM SLT with a sound check and dedication, Ritchie Havens takes the stage at 9 AM and we continue all day and into the evening. I have found room within our 12 hour format to play at least some of, and in some cases all of, every performer that played at the 1969 festival.
Having collected some rare recordings and bootlegs this is as close to the real deal as I could get within our format. The build is outstanding and with just a little imagination, you will be there at the most talked about event of this kind, ever.
Please note this:
Donations to The Relay for Life will be triple matched at this event, meaning for every Linden dollar you donate THREE will go to fund cancer research! This is a valuable opportunity to make your efforts count in this noble cause.

BennyThe Boozehound

There will be many fun activities, and opportunities for you to donate to Sail4Life through the day. One of my favorites are the Hope flowers; Fiona’s scripted flowers you can plant at the NYC concert, and dedicate them to anyone you want to send a message of Hope. :-)

Oh! And did you see that Orca’s leading a mass sail-what-you-want cruise from Triumphal to the concert? Don’t miss that either! It leaves the TrYC dock at 12:00 Noon sharp!
